Abortion Stories with Cait

In this episode, Jessy and Rebekah read a review, Rebekah talks about her hairy, hairy vulvic region and then your favorite hosts sit down and have a chat with their producer Cait Moldenhauer about her experience having an abobo. Or an abortion. Whatever you want to call it. As always, we try to tackle it with a good dash of humor, but in the end, it’s a well-researched and serious conversation about abortion access, care and the experience of one woman who believes that talking openly about her abortion will help undo some of the shame put on women who choose to have one. It’s a good listen. Enjoy!

  • 06:15: Here is the Science Vs episode Cait references. Give it a listen! It’s super informative.
  • 06:46: Here is the trailer for Reversing Roe
  • 10:25: Women and low income people found getting a divorce easier starting in the 1960s and it was in the 1970s that no-fault divorces started becoming more popular. But it wasn’t until 2010 that New York state became the last of the 50 states to allow a no-fault divorce even when there was no mutual consent for the divorce. Wow! Who knew?!
  • 11:30: Here are some FAQs on the CDC website, including the fact that states are not required to report abortions to any centralized database.
  • 14:30: This is an INCREDIBLE article by Kayla Webley Adler for Marie Claire magazine on Dr. Colleen McNicholas entitled “On the Front Lines of the Abortion Wars.” We highly recommend you read this.
  • 15:30: Here is the New York Times article about the assassination of George Tiller in his church in Kansas.
  • 31:00: Here is some information from NARAL about forced ultrasound laws. They are horrible.
  • 41:00: Here is an article from Planned Parenthood all about the abortion pill and how it works. Here is something from the Mayo Clinic. And another one from Smithsonian Magazine that talks about the reasons people use the abortion pill and how some women buy them online because they do not have access nearby. And finally, one from Glamour magazine. These are not all perfect articles but they do give context for some of the issues we get into in the show.
  • 42:45: Just as an aside, here is a blog about how women suffering from chronic pain wait longer to receive pain medication. This reflects the disparity in care given to men and women. When viewed through this lens, it is not surprising that women do not receive pain medication when undergoing an incredibly painful experience.

Speaking of Cait, here is where you can find her!:

FYRE Festival : Part 2

“I need you to take one for the team.” This is a directive from con-artist Billy McFarland to his loyal employee, Andy King. At the time, Billy was asking Andy to go to the Bahamian Customs Office and suck the official’s dick so he would release cases of Evian for the Fyre Festival. And Andy was going to do it. Now THAT’s the kind of loyalty all bosses must demand from their employees.

Poor Andy King, though. Caitlin’s not a fan but Sue has a lot of compassion for him because she has been in that situation before. Not that exact situation, to be fair, but she has done some weird shit for her bosses. One time, when she was a receptionist at an ad agency, she had to go to the Manhattan Mall and pick out some birthday presents for her boss’s daughter. That maybe isn’t super weird. BUT her last workplace had Terry Richardson photos all over the walls, which definitely created a hostile work environment. (HWE.) Eventually, they got taken down and replaced by a gigantic print of Kate Moss smoking. So.

Anyway, Sue Smith and Caitlin Brodnick are back with Episode 2 of their coverage of the Fyre Festival, the trash fire brainchild of scammers Billy McFarland and Ja Rule.

In this episode, they finish talking about the execution of the “festival” (a word used verrrry loosely) and then discuss all the thematic elements at play, just like this was a literature class or something, but way more fun because literature is boring. And Sue can authoritatively say that because she has a B.A. in English. Imagine paying that much money to study a language you already speak? Her younger self truly did not understand how the world worked.

Speaking of not understanding the world, yeah the main themes in these documentaries are racism and substance abuse..

Also, they would love for rich people to weigh in on the logistics and mind fuckery of this all. When someone orders you to put $3,000 on a digital wristband the night before the festival, why do you do it. Also, HOW? How do you have so much money that it’s just a drop in the bucket for you. Again, no shade, but please call in because they truly can’t wrap our heads around it. And they are not judging you for being rich, at all. To the contrary, they both would like to be rich one day. They are, however, judging you for being suckers! Hahahaha jkjkjk

Cait & Murda Don’t Understand Why Everyone Loves Ken – “Firestorm” (1984)

Cait & Murda spend another week as best friends sitting through a vintage porn in this episode of There Will Be Porn podcast. One by one they watch the AVN’s The 101 Greatest Adult Tapes Of All Time counting down to the best porn of them all.

Cait & Murda are watching #84 Firestorm, from 1984 For a movie that is barely a porn and really only have one male protagonist, Murda and Cait still find ways to squeeze in a throuple discussion, fitting a thong to your butt shape, and what is an acceptable penis size for porns.

This episode is a long one. There is just so much story to the movie, Firestorm. Ken Cushing is a down and out writer, who gets gigs as a side piece for wealthy women. His girlfriend/ex-girlfriend/hostage Liza follow him around no matter how many women he sleeps with or blind virgins he falls for. Is there Fire? Nope. Do we talk about Fyre Fest? Yes we do.

FYRE Festival : Part 1

It’s HERE! The Fyre Festival. The entire reason Sue and Caitlin started this podcast.

Fyre – a legendary tale of white male arrogance, social media branding, and rich kids trapped on an island as the world laughed. Fyre – a music festival where no music was actually played; a luxury experience complete with FEMA tents and impoverished, unpaid day laborers; a Ponzi scheme mixed with a catfish rolling on Molly. It was somehow more disastrous than anyone could have predicted, and totally predictable.

Six months ago, overwhelmed by the injustice, absurdity, and outright BALLSINESS of the Fyre Festival, Sue Smith needed to talk to someone about it. How was this even possible? It turned out that Caitlin Brodnick held a love of historic scams, and ScamWow was born: two comedians, fascinated by cons and hypnotized by orange tiles on Instagram, tackling the world’s most effective grifters.

Hulu? Netflix? Which Fyre documentary was better? Well, Netflix obviously, but Caitlin and Sue watched both. They discuss all of the events leading up to the festival (and they use the term “festival” loosely). They dig deep on lead con artist Billy McFarland and his little henchman Ja Rule. Seriously, Ja Rule seems really not all there mentally. No shade, but is he ok? If he tells you to get in the water, run and get help.

They ponder models swimming with pigs, Instagram influencer shit, and Pablo Escobar’s alleged Island. The usual. And OMG that brilliant moment where all the influencers wax poetic about their personal brands?!?!  And they all agree that it’s…positivity? Because of course it is.

This epic scam – along with Anna Delvey (who they will soon cover!), Theranos, Caroline Calloway (they will get to her too), and that weird Instagram egg – show that despite our unlimited access to information, scams aren’t going away. As long as someone craves a quick buck or getting drunk on a yacht with models without possessing any redeeming qualities, there will be someone there promising to make those dreams real. And isn’t that what this story is about? If you throw enough booze, money, and promises of celebrity out there, even otherwise smart people become the posse thrown under the runaway train of a vicious scam.

Why didn’t they cover this sooner? There are just SO MANY scams. Sue and Caitlin sincerely apologize for not covering this sooner, but the time has now come to rip into this ridiculous historical moment.

They’ll also cover the very bad play Sue saw in Los Angeles last week. Linda Vista? We don’t recommend it unless you want to see schlubby white peen. Caitlin talks about her amazing topless dog-walking role in the Netflix movie Set It Up that was cut out! Sue would like to apologize for her sniffles. She has two cats that she’s allergic to. Whatever, they’re cute. And Caitlin will play you a clip of her singing child! So much cuteness! Thank you for diving into the epic trash abyss of this scam for two episodes! There’s so much good garbage!

  • 01:20: Seriously. A restaurant is actually banning women from dining solo at the bar because they might be escorts. So solo women that come in have to move to a table. Give us a BREAK.
  • 04:00: God forbid anyone try to help save people in this fucking country, you know?! Like, we get it that people shouldn’t be trespassing on federal land and whatnot, but we live in a country run by a man who is trying to strip a lot of national park land of its protected status so he can open it up to development so this seems a little out of step. Seems to us like maybe the problem is that these women were trying to help immigrants. What do you think?

Magical Scams w/ Mark Philip Lichtenstein

Wow, wow, wow. Who knew that magic could be so intense and controversial? We sure didn’t. That was until magician Mark Philip Lichtenstein joined us in the studio to explain some classic magic tricks to us. Big hint on where this podcast is headed: Caity does NOT like getting tricked.

Mark reached out to us when he heard about the premise of our show, yet when he arrived in our studio he was a bit hesitant to tell his secrets, which was a huge tease for us. Guess that old adage is true. Also, he wouldn’t admit that magic in general is a wholesale scam, even though HE was the one who reached out to US, a podcast about scams. Anyway, he teaches us some tricks and we look at a very outdated website together and make fun of one of the guys and perhaps that was maybe mean and we should have edited that out, but you know what? We think it paints a picture! We’re all about painting pictures. We’re like the Bob Ross of podcasting: Pod Ross.

CoINCIDENTALLY: Sue is visiting the Magic Castle in LA this week, which, unfortunately, will not happen before this podcast comes out, but it’s kind of a weird coincidence, don’t you think? It’s like magic. The Magic Castle is this 55 year-old club for magicians in the Hollywood Hills that is invite-only and has dinner, shows, and an extraordinarily strict dress code. Like, very strict. The website even goes as far as to specify that rompers are not permitted. Now, that’s kind of a sweeping generalization, don’t you think? Rompers have come a long way and, these days, can be incredibly formal. Just step into a Madewell!

We’re torn on the concept of a dress code. On one hand, it’s like: don’t you dare tell me what to do/wear/act because you’re part of the patriarchy, and, on the other hand, it’s like: people don’t act right and they certainly don’t dress right. Just go to your local mall and you’ll see dozens of teens in pajamas. …And now we’ve become crabby old men telling kids to get off their lawns. BUT SERIOUSLY. People need to dress right and then we won’t need dress codes! No flip-flops at work! No pajamas at the Magic Castle. How hard is that?

Also, something we learned from Mark is that there are very few female magicians. Ladies: this is an untapped market for you and possibly a wise career choice! But if you think about it, magic is super patriarchal. Like, a man stands on stage and tries to control your entire experience, including the way you think and feel. It’s designed to gaslight you and make you second-guess yourself. That’s probably why we got so fired up in the studio! The patriarchy really stinks! Bad!

Anyway, if you would like to experience some of Mark’s magic in person, you can find Mark Philip Lichtenstein at https://magician.nyc/ See ya next week!

Baron von F**k: Clark Rockefeller w/ Anna Drezen

Saturday Night Live writer and hilarious comedian, Anna Drezen, takes a break from 30 Rock to stop by the studio and talk to us about the amazing con-artist, Clark Rockefeller. aka Christopher Chichester. aka Christian Gerhartsreiter. aka Chip Smith. This guy has had so many names. And tinted glasses, and the audacity to give David Berkowitz’s social security number on a job application! (He’s the Son of Sam.) The balls! Anna, go put this in one of your skits for SNL. Anyway, we’ve got 17 aliases, 3 hilarious comedians, and 3 dogs in the More Banana podcast studio today. (Our producer, Cait, calls it Kill Room Studios. Should we be concerned?  If we go missing, check the Kill Room!)

One of the common themes we see with all of these scammers is that they have a crazy amount of gusto and confidence and people just bow down to that without verifying stuff. Indeed, a scammer is also referred to as a con artist, or con-man, which is short for “confidence man.” The deeper we get into these scams, the more we realize this to be true! It’s crazy that every subject of our podcast, every person we focus on, is super, super super confident. That’s what it takes to be a good trickster, we guess! Clark Rockefeller was so confident that he deserved to live in that lady’s house in California that he killed her kids and buried them in the backyard! Call it delusional, call it crazy, but he was, over everything else, absolutely certain that no one else would call him out on his bullshit. And that’s exactly how he got hired on Wall Street, too. He just walked down to the Financial District with a sharp jawline and a fake name and the Son of Sam’s social security number and knew that no one would question him! It’s wild.

As a woman, it’s much tougher to have that kind of confidence. We’re taught to second guess ourselves, and that something isn’t happening, even when it is. That’s what gaslighting is. When you call someone out on something and they’re like, “I’m not crazy, you’re crazy and here’s why!” Oh! We forgot to tell you this. We tweeted it from our account (@scamwowpodcast), but maybe you missed it because it seems like people don’t use Twitter anymore. Anyway, the New York Post reported over the weekend that Louis C.K. gave Sarma Melngailis an STD! Can you believe?! There were some emails leaked between the two of them and, MAN, were they gaslighty! Louis C.K. was like, “I never told you I was clean. No one is truly clean in this day and age.” Which is SOME BULLSHIT because, um, YES, you absolutely CAN be clean. All you have to is get a test and it will tell you and then get your ailments treated. Oh, in case you don’t recall, Sarma is the former vegan chef and owner of One Lucky Duck and Pure Food and Wine who was sort of brainwashed (we think) into giving all her money to a random guy and her businesses eventually folded and she ended up in a hotel room eating pizza. It was wild. We have an episode on it.

Anyway, things are a trash fire. Hope you enjoy the podcast!

Cait & Murda Are Capitalist Enemies – “Farmer’s Daughters : The Movie” (1986)

Cait & Murda spend another week as best friends sitting through a vintage porn in this episode of There Will Be Porn podcast. One by one they watch the AVN’s The 101 Greatest Adult Tapes Of All Time counting down to the best porn of them all.

Cait & Murda are watching #87 Farmer’s Daughters : The Movie, from 1986. It’s a classic leftist tale of hard working farmer getting fucked by the government, and then letting everyone fuck his daughters on film to pay back his mortgage. Does this film turn Cait & Murda into dirty commies? Or does it just prove that sex is the only industry that matters…

It’s thought-provoking, informative and full of that brand of holiday cheer that you only get by being called a commie bitch by your uncle. Strap in, it’s quite a ride!

  • 01:30: This is a serious question for our listeners. What do you do when someone in your family says something you disagree with? Or, worse, says something that is racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, transphobic, etc.? And what if you are the only one who disagrees? What is the best course of action, taking into consideration your own emotional and mental safety and the fact that this is your family? We would love to hear from you. Email us at welcometomyvagina@gmail.com
  • 03:11: For those of you who don’t know, “guinea plank” refers to the Verrazzano Bridge which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island. According to the ultimate resource Urban Dictionary, the term is “derived from the stereotype that Italians, escaping from Brooklyn, use this bridge to get to the one neighborhood they can escape to.” Who knew.

The New Moon Studio with Tattoo Artist Extraordinaire Zoe Bean

In this episode Jessy and Rebekah have the absolute pleasure of talking to Zoe Bean. She is a tattooer, she is a business owner and she is an all-around fucking badass. She tells us stories about being a woman tattooing back when women were less common in the industry, how the tattoo industry is going through its own me too movement, a little about medical tattooing, her biggest pet peeves and so much more. Seriously, don’t miss this one. And if you are interested in checking out her studio, you can find it on Instagram @thenewmoonstudio or you can find Zoe her at @zoebeantattoo. Don’t forget to look for her awesome partner Drew Linden, @drewlinden.

  • 01:00: Zoe starts out by telling us how it is impossible to earn a living on a teacher’s salary these days because our country doesn’t value education enough to actually pay the people who provide it
  • 02:00: And then she tells us basically the most romantic love story of all times. Oh, and also how tattooing, at least when she started out, is governed by the same misogynist rules as the ones that govern the rest of the world. Sigh.
  • 08:45: Here is a link to The Sweet Feminist Instagram account which is amazing. Also, we are trying to get her on the show and haven’t been having much luck. Does anyone know her? Help ya girls out!
  • 09:00: And here is the cake she made following Louis C.K.’s standing ovation which still makes us want to scream.
  • 09:30: Drew Linden is fucking incredible. Here is her Instagram account where you can look at all her INCREDIBLE work and just generally support a badass tattoo artist.
  • 21:10: Zoe’s shop is called The New Moon Studio. It is located in Dumbo and you should all go there. Well, like, make an appointment first obviously but, go.
  • 28:30: Paramedical tattooing is really amazing. Here is an article from The Guardian featuring a few women talking about their post mastectomy tattoos.
  • 29:15: Here is Jessie Fora’s Instagram account if you want to check out her work.

FOSTA SESTA Change or Disappear

On this week’s episode, Jessy and Rebekah discuss Matt Whitaker, Jeff Sessions’ replacement as Attorney General. Now, Jeff Sessions was for sure a racist so we’re not sad to see him go. But Whitaker? He’s something else. You’re favorite hosts then move on to FOSTA/SESTA, a bill signed into law that seriously restricts expression on the internet all under the guise of trying to disrupt sex trafficking. There have already been a lot of serious implications, including some ways in which we personally have been effected. It’s sort of a serious episode but don’t you worry, we wrap that shit up with a few well placed dad jokes so fasten your seatbelts and get ready to laugh (and maybe fill with dread) until you queef.

  • 01:30: According to the Des Moines Register, during the Iowa Family Leader debate  back in 2014, in reference to potential judges Whitaker went on the record as saying, “I’d like to see things like their world view, what informs them. Are they people of faith? Do they have a biblical view of justice?… I’m a New Testament. And what I know is as long as they have that world view, that they’ll be a good judge.” Religion should not be involved in the law, but this quote directly rejects both Judaism and the Muslim faith which predate the New Testament.
  • 02:00: Here is an article about the Ten Commandments and The Supreme Court!
  • 02:30: If you read nothing else that we post in the notes, PLEASE read this. Here is an article from Playboy. About Whitaker’s big dick toilets. You’re welcome.
  • 07:00: If you missed it, here is the totally awesome Camel Toe video. Watch at your own risk since apparently this is censorship worthy. (Insert eye roll here.)
  • 11:30: Here is a link to the organization Survivors Against SESTA. There is a lot of information and A TON of resources for people who want to get involved in this fight. This is super, super important.
  • 11:35: Here is a link to the American Sex Podcast episode on FOSTA/SESTA. Give it a listen it is incredibly informative.
  • 12:45: This is Jonathan Corbett’s blog post. It goes into a lot of the ways in which this new legislation is effecting all of us I our day-to-day lives in ways we never could have expected.
  • 14:45: IT’S LIKE FOSTA/SESTA FIGHT CLUB!
  • 16:30: Here is a link to Freedom Network USA. Check them out.
  • 18:45: This is a link to the study entitled “Craigslist’s Effect on Violence Against Women” which was put out by Gregory DeAngelo from West Virginia University along with Scott Cunningham and John Tripp of Baylor University.
  • 22:00: TITS AND SASS!!!!
  • 23:00: And here is a link to a Wiki page about John Schools, which are apparently way more prevalent than either of us knew. But they are just as ineffective as we imagined. Shocker.
  • 26:00: Here is a link to information about the Communications Decency Act.
  • 31:30: Check out our conversation with Olivia and Maya, two totally rad students from Wesleyan University who go to high schools to teach sex ed!
  • 33:30: You can learn all about Kitty Striker here!
  • 38:00: We’re famous! WE’RE FAMOUS! It’s really happening! We were talked about in an article by  the Electronic Frontier Foundation!
